Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to understand the experiences of South Korean social workers who have worked in Ansan Onmaum Center (currently Ansan Mental Health Trauma Center). Data were collected through in-depth interviews with seven social workers and analyzed using a qualitative case study approach, specifically, within-case analysis and the cross-case analysis. Each case was carefully examined and summarized as a story-telling style in the within-case analysis. In the cross-case analysis, the issues revealed in the within-case analysis were reviewed, compared and integrated. During the process, five major themes emerged, including ¡®being motivated by the mission of the community¡¯, ¡®patients or neighbors, concealed power game¡¯, ¡®mediators who liaise between victims and their daily life through an everyday dialectic¡¯, ¡®new wine in old bottles¡¯, ¡®weak political power of the social welfare sector¡¯ Based on the findings, studies on organization for disaster social work practice, development of the disaster social work practice and training of social workers as disaster experts are discussed.
